day trip to baldy............................

I recently headed up the mountain on a Sunday afternoon with my young nephews for some sightseeing and a little adventure. Mount Baldy is just a few short miles north of the 210 fwy,on a winding yet well paved two lane road. In the heart of Baldy Village is The Baldy Lodge,a really cool place to check out, great for indoor or outdoor dining, great sandwiches and more,i have had the club and the grilled cheese with onion rings. The Baldy Lodge also rents a few cabins, best in wintertime when there is snow! More info from the Baldy Lodge website; http://mtbaldylodge.com Visit us in the center of Mt Baldy Village, 4000ft above the smog and heat; nestled beautifully in the heart of Southern California's oak, pine and bay trees. Make a day or an afternoon trip for great food or a cocktail. Relax on our patio with only the birds chirping in the background or on a cool day sit fireside sipping some cappucino. Spend your night playing pool, foosball, jukebox music, and chatting it up with the locals. Or, live out your Idol dreams with a round of raucous karaoke! Enjoy unique live music on Saturday nights. We are open Monday through Friday at 11am, and Saturday and Sunday at 9am for breakfast. If you want to stay overnight, we have cozy cabins for rent, beach volleyball, basketball, swimming and horseshoe pits. Enjoy world-class road and mountain biking, and endless hiking and running trails beginning right at our doorstep. We are located within a hour from L.A. and the OC, and only 15 minutes from the 210 Freeway North of Claremont and Upland.

THE HISTORY OF MOUNT BALDY,CALIFORNIA

Home of the annual Summer Run to the Top Race and site of one of the closest winter ski lifts to Los Angeles, California, Mt. Baldy is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. With a rich history, Mt. Baldy is one of the most well recognized and visited mountains in Southern California.
Elevation* Mt. Baldy's peak is at 10,064 feet, making it the tallest mountain in Los Angeles County. Formation The highest point in the San Gabriel Mountain Range, Mt. Baldy is an example of a "folded" mountain. It was formed as the result of seismic forces along multiple fault lines that transverse the range and are associated with the collision zone involving the North American and Pacific plates in the Earth's crust. Name Officially named Mt. San Antonio, this snow-covered mountain gained its nickname from its treeless summit. Bald and snow-capped, the peak is easily recognized through the winter and spring. Human History The Gabrielino-Tongva tribe's history in the Los Angeles basin dates 7,000 years. Tribe members called the snow-capped mountain, "Yoat," which means snow. Today the tribe shares their culture through educational events at the Mt. Baldy Environmental Education Center. Mt. Baldy Schoolhouse Opened in 1921 as a school for the settlement that is known today as the town of Sierra Madre, the Mt. Baldy Schoolhouse closed in the 1970's after it failed to pass new earthquake standards. Today the old Schoolhouse serves as the Mt. Baldy Visitor Center. Mt. Baldy Zen Center Founded in 1971, the Mt. Baldy Zen Center still acts as a retreat center for students of the Rinzai Zen lineage. Read more at Trails.com: The History of Mt. mt. baldy

Mt. Baldy ski area, San Gabriel Mountains, California

(...) While the staff is great, and the locals are tremendous, this is a very advanced mountain with extremely challenging conditions that are nothing like anything else in Southern California.ÿ You cannot compare a slope like, say, Vertigo at Mountain High West, rated as a double-black diamond, with any double-black diamond at Baldy, where the slopes are far steeper and have numerous obstacles.ÿ While I found some really sweet powder their last week, the area is prone to very high winds, sheets of glassy ice where you
would never expect them, and even after a big snowfall, there are stretches of mud, dirt, and rocks.ÿÿ If you take training seriously, and are experienced, and you pay attention every single second, and you don't mind having the living crap scared out of you,
you can have a great time on this mountain.ÿ If you are lazy, drunk or inexperienced, be prepared to go home in a cast-- or a helicopter.ÿ --Ma says Matthew.

The Mt. Baldy Ski Patrol is the best ski patrol in the country and the mountain is absolutely fantastic! says Jay Reidy.

All 4 lifts at this ski resort are capably taken care of and operated by caring folks. This ski resort has 400 acres of terrain, and it's all in wonderful shape. Mt. Baldy has the biggest drop among ski mountains in a 310 mile

Baldy is a smaller size than average ski resort having a roughly average altitude difference when compared to other west coast ski mountains. There aren’t any hotels close by, but if you're ready to go a small length then no problem, but if you don’t have reservations, you could end up slumbering in your car. This ski mountain gets blanketed by an average amount of snow every snow season. This ski area has an elevation difference of 2,100 feet which is remarkable. Mt. Baldy has a reasonable variety of ski slopes and few lifts. This ski hill gets 8 feet of snow every winter, and that keeps the depth delightful. The pretty loveliness of the California highlands and tremendous trails make the visit here worthwhile. The skiing and the snowboarding in this region is scores of fun the whole winter. All the 28 ski runs here are glorious. The ski map of Mt. Baldy on this web page of course says a thousand words. Getting a glorious workout and just being on the slopes for a while outclasses anything. The mountains of the San Gabriel Mountains in wintertime are a brilliant place for snowboarding or skiing. In wintertime the California mountains are a brilliant place for snowboarding or skiing. The San Gabriel Mountains and its mountains is a sight worth seeing. You might be into skiing or snowboarding, or both, doesn't matter, this is a vicinity with a load of sites for that.
